Exonucleases remove a single nucleotide or an oligonucleotide at the 5’ or 3’ end. Exonuclease, such as Three Prime Repair Exonuclease 1 (TREX1), plays an important role in proofreading of DNA amplification and removal of damaged DNA. Deficiency of TREX1 enzyme has been shown to trigger autoimmune disease, Aicardia-Goutieres syndrome. TREX1 expression has been reported to correlate with cervical cancer cell growth and disease progression.
