Description

Calcitonin is a peptide hormone with 32 amino acids and mainly produced by the C cells of the thyroid and certain endocrine cells of the lung. Under normal expression conditions, procalcitonin is immediately cleaved into three specific fragments, an N terminal residue, calcitonin and katacalcin. Calcitonin is also found in fish, reptiles, birds and other mammals. Calcitonin opposes the action of the parathyroid hormone (PTH), helping to regulate the blood’s calcium and phosphate levels. Calcitonin also acts as a first messenger to regulate adenylyl cyclase/cAMP and mammalian sperm function.
