Neuropeptide Y (NPY) is a 36 amino acid highly conserved peptide abundantly distributed in the central and peripheral nervous system. NPY is found in post-ganglionic sympathetic neurons, adrenal gland nerve fibers, and adrenal chromaffin cells. Upon sympathetic stimulation, NPY is released as a co-transmitter with norepinephrine (NE). In addition to neurons, NPY is also present in the lung, heart, spleen, blood vessels, and reproductive organs. NPY participates in multiple physiological functions such as mood swings, homeostasis of the cardiovascular and immune system, angiogenesis, appetite, and cardiac remodeling. Increased levels of NPY are observed in stress-related conditions such as hypoxia, temperature extremes, ischemia, and tissue injury. NPY is also demonstrated to play a critical role in the pathophysiology of several disorders such as alcoholism, atherosclerosis, obesity, diabetes, and dyslipidemia. Therefore NPY could serve as a promising target for the treatment of human disorders. ’s NPY (Human) ELISA kit quantitatively measures NPY in human serum, plasma, and other biological fluids. Test samples, Standards, and Biotinylated Detection antibody are added to the wells pre-coated with capture antibody and then washed with Wash Buffer. HRP-Streptavidin is added to the plate, and post-incubation any unattached conjugates are washed off by Wash Buffer. The HRP enzymatic reaction is detected using TMB-substrate. Finally, an acidic stop solution terminates the enzymatic reaction. The color developed is directly proportional to the amount of NPY in the sample or standard.
