Background: VEGF | Vascular endothelial growth factor is a growth factor active in angiogenesis, vasculogenesis and endothelial cell growth. It induces endothelial cell proliferation, promotes cell migration, inhibits apoptosis and induces permeabilization of blood vessels. When VEGF is overexpressed, it can contribute to disease. Cancers that can express VEGF are able to grow and metastasize. VEGF is sometimes referred to as vascular permeability factor.
