Description

The transmembrane serine protease 2 (TMPRSS2) plays an important role in the infection mechanism of human coronaviruses such as SARS-CoV-2. Cell entry of SARS-CoV-2 depends on the binding of the viral spike (S) glycoprotein to the ACE2 receptor and S protein priming by TMPRSS2. TMPRSS2 is also shown to be upregulated by androgen in prostate cancer cells, and downregulated in androgen-independent prostate cancer.
