Description

A polyene antifungal antibiotic from Streptomyces. Amphotericin B targets a wide range of susceptible fungi including Histoplasma, Coccidioides, and Cryptococcus species. Amphotericin B targets ergosterol in the fungal cell membrane and increases permeability. This alteration of the cell membrane is toxic to the fungus and leads to death. Can be used as a selective agent in several types of isolation media.
