Description

Double-stranded RNA-specific adenosine deaminase (ADAR1) encodes the enzyme that is responsible for destabilization of double-stranded RNA by deaminating adenosine to inosine in non-coding repetitive elements and short interspersed nuclear elements. ADAR1 is known to be expressed in embryonic cells and adult tissues and is responsible for the maturation and differentiation of these cells and tissues. ADAR1 also plays an essential role in the maintenance of hematopoietic stem cells. Several isoforms of ADAR1 exist, which includes a full-length protein (150 kDa) and two short functionally active isoforms (80 and 110 kDa).
