Background: Glutathione is a tripeptide consisting of glutamate, cysteine and glycine. Glutathione contains sulfhydryl groups and has antioxidant and integrated detoxification effects. Glutathione has reduced form (GSH) or oxidized form (GSSG), reduced glutathione predominates in physiological conditions. Glutathione reductase catalyzes the alternations between the two forms. GSH/GSSG is one of the most important redox pairs in cells. Therefore, the determination of GSH and GSSG content and GSH/GSSG ratio in cells can well reflect the redox state of cells and is also one of the main indicators of the glutathione redox cycle.
