BACKGROUND: V-jun avian sarcoma virus 17 oncogene homolog; Jun activation domain binding protein. The human protooncogene JUN is the putative transforming gene of avian sarcoma virus 17, and it encodes a protein which is highly homologous to the viral protein. The JUN gene product has also been shown to be structurally and functionally identical to the enhancer binding protein, AP-1; thus AP-1 may be encoded by JUN. The JUN protein interacts directly with specific target DNA sequences to regulate gene expression. JUN has been mapped to 1p32-p31, a chromosomal region involved in both translocations and deletions in human malignancies.
