BACKGROUND: This gene encodes a kinesin-like protein that functions as a microtubule-dependent molecular motor. The encoded protein can depolymerize microtubules at the plus end, thereby promoting mitotic chromosome segregation. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
