Background: Machupo virus (MACV) is a member of the NW complex of arenaviruses and is the causative agent of Bolivian hemorrhagic fever (HF) . Bolivian HF is a febrile illness often associated with vascular leakage and occasional concomitant neurological manifestations. Infection can result in a systemic inflammatory response syndrome leading to multiple organ failure and death.
