N-Acetyl-L-cysteine is an antioxidant and mucolytic agent. As an antioxidant, NAC scavenges hydrogen peroxide, hydroxyl radical, and hypochlorous acid. Increases cellular pools of free radical scavengers. Reported to prevent apoptosis in neuronal cells but induce apoptosis in smooth muscle cells.
