Description
Prostate specific antigen (PSA) is a kallikrein, a subgroup of serine proteases with diverse physiological functions. PSA is synthesized in the epithelial cells of the grostate gland, and is present in seminal plasma. PSA is thought to promote liquefaction of seminal coagulum. Growing evidence suggests that many kallikreins, including PSA, are involved in carcinogenesis. PSA is therefore used as a diagnostic biomarker for prostate cancer and other diseases.
