BACKGROUND: PIN1 is an essential nuclear peptidyl-prolyl cis/trans isomerase involved in the regulation of mitosis. PIN1 is a member of a new class of peptidyl-prolyl cis/trans isomerases that includes the Escherichia coli parvulin, yeast ESS1, and Drosophila melanogaster dodo gene products. Lu et al. (1996) described human PIN1 and showed that deletion of PIN1 from HeLa cells induces mitotic arrest, whereas HeLa cells overexpressing PIN1 arrest in the G2 phase.
