Description

Tau is a microtubule-associated protein involved in Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. It promotes microtubule assembly and stability, and might participate in the establishment and maintenance of neuronal polarity. The C-terminus binds axonal microtubules while the N-terminus binds neural plasma membrane components, suggesting that tau functions as a linker protein between both. Axonal polarity is predetermined by TAU/MAPT localization (in the neuronal cell) in the domain of the cell body defined by the centrosome. The short isoforms allow plasticity of the cytoskeleton whereas the longer isoforms may preferentially play a role in its stabilization.

Activity (Specifications/test method): Determined by an in vivo assay using healthy wild type male mice (C57BL/6J). Mice were treated via intraperitoneal injection once at a dose of 4g Nesfatin-1/gm of body weight. Significant effects on body weight and food consumption were observed relative to saline-treated controls.
