Description

Nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase (NAMPT), also known as visfatin or pre-B-cell colony enhancing factor, is a protein that catalyzes the formation of nicotinamide mononucleotide as part of the biosynthetic pathway that produces nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD). This protein is thought to be involved in many important biological processes, including metabolism, stress response, and aging. The secreted form of the protein acts as a cytokine to promote B cell maturation and inhibits neutrophil apoptosis. Visfatin operates as a circadian clock modulator through NAD-mediated oscillation of clock target gene expression such as CLOCK and ARNTL through a SIRT1-mediated mechanism.
